2013 Summer Art Camps
Turner Center for the Arts 2013 Children's Summer Classes
 
Ceramics (first session)
  • Dates: Mon. June 17, Tues. June 18, Wed. June 19, (Skip Thurs.), Fri. June 21, Fri. June 2
  • Time: 10am - Noon
  • Instructor: S.L. Mason Elementary art teacher Hannah Erb-Summers
  • Ages: 8 - 12, maximum of 12 students
  • Cost $75 ($50 for class and $25 for supplies)*
 
In the first four class sessions, students will use clay to create their own hand built, sculpted, or thrown ceramic works. In the fifth session, students will paint glazes on their bisque fired works. A second firing will produce finished works, which will be ready for pickup the following week.
 
Children's Culinary class followed by Children's Etiquette class
(These two classes are typically taken in conjunction)
  • Dates: Monday - Friday, the week of July 8 - 12.
  • Time: 10 am - Noon, then Etiquette from 12:30 - 1:30pm
  • Instructors: Culinary will be led by Sharon Coleman & Jeannie Grow. Etiquette will be led by guest instructors each day.
  • Ages: 8 - 12, maximum of 12 students
  • Cost: $50 for Culinary, $30 for Etiquette, or BOTH for $75*
 
Each day, the students will learn cooking techniques and terms to expand their knowledge of cooking and world cultures. The first four days will be themed in a different cultural cuisine and the final day will host an "iron chef" type team cooking contest. The students will enjoy each day's kitchen creations for lunch, followed by etiquette instruction (optional). Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Grow will lead the culinary class with many guest instructors.

  • Dates: Mon. July 8, Tues. July 9, Wed. July 10, (Skip Thursday), Fri. July 12, Fri. July 19
  • Time: 10am - Noon
  • Instructor: Turner Center ceramics instructor Kristen Stengl
  • Ages: 8 - 12, maximum of 12 students
  • Cost: $75 ($50 for class and $25 for supplies)*

"Elephant in the Room" Art class
A progressive project of sculpting, dying, painting, drawing and mixed media.
  • Dates: Monday - Friday, the week of July 15 - 19.
  • Time: 10 am - Noon
  • Instructor: St. John's School art instructor Jessica Akins
  • Ages: 8 - 12, maximum of 12 students
  • Cost: $50*
 
Day One: Students dye and paint fabrics for use on Wednesday.
Day Two: Students hand build/sculpt an elephant form using air-dry clay.
Day Three: Students use their hand-dyed and painted fabrics, plus paints, to decorate their elephants.
Day Four: With a focus on drawing, students will explore various jungle landscape scenes and plants.
Day Five: Students will use their drawings, plus mixed art supplies (fabrics, paper, paint, beads) to create dioramas for their elephants to live in.
 
*Scholarships available, based on need, and are offered through the Center for the Arts Guild Scholarship Fund. Applicants should submit a brief essay (50-100 words) stating why they want to take the class(es).

Baby Safety Expo

SGMC along with Safe Kids Lowndes County, Connecting Kids SGMC & Khol's Cares, Georgia Department of Public Health- South Health District will host a Baby Safety Expo this Saturday, June 15th at Mathis Auditorium from 9am to 12 noon. This expo is to provide a morning of fun and education to help you keep your baby safe and healthy! Moms with children up to 2 years of age are invited to this super-fun and informative community event.
Topics covered will be Car Seat Safety, Nutrition, Dental Health, Immunizations, Breastfeeding, Hearing Screenings, Choking Rescue, Water Safety, and much, much more!! Free home safety kits will be distributed (while supplies last).

South Georgia Medical Center and the YMCA are teaming up to offer this one day Safe Sitter® course for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. The class will be offered on June 7, June 21 or July 1 or 19 from 8:30am - 3:30pm at SGMC.

The cost of this course is $35 per child. These classes will help young people become more confident babysitters. As a parent, you will feel more secure having a Safe Sitter® in your home. To enroll your child, call 229.333.1074. The Safe Sitter® program may save someone you love!
