VSU's Science Saturdays!

Science Saturdays

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University’s College of Arts and Sciences has planned a variety of activities to excite young people about the world of science during Science Saturdays, slated to begin Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Science Saturday program is part of the College of Arts and Sciences STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Initiative. The goal of the STEM initiative is to encourage students to major in STEM areas and help students succeed in those programs. The program puts science and math into a fun and entertaining context and allows students to see basic scientific principles in action.

“We held a Science Saturday last winter with the chemistry department and it turned out to be a huge success with approximately 200 students and their parents attending,” said Dr. Gary Wood, professor and coordinator for the Center of Applied Research. “Based on comments from the parents, we expanded the program to all of the sciences. The main goal for us is to excite kids about science, keep them excited and possibly influence them to make it a career choice.”

The first Science Saturday was held on Feb. 12 as an outreach event to commemorate the International Year of Chemistry. Wood said that the College of Arts and Sciences hopes to make the series an annual event.

“This is our first large program and we are all excited and optimistic that it will be well-received by the community.”

Amanda's Model & Talent Open Call

This Open Call does not mean you need to be prepared to pack your bags and move to the big city.

This Open Call does not mean if your child is not called back that they are just not meant for this business.

I've worked so hard to build relationships with the likes of J Pervis Talent of Atlanta, and Barry Shapiro of NYC and they trust that we really do have the best of the best in South GA, Alabama and North Florida. They take away from their jobs, their families and their weekends to travel to little ole' Hahira, GA because I tell them they will see something they can't find anywhere else.

It is $25.00 and an opportunity to build your child's self confidence. I wouldn't miss it for the world.

You just need to bring a picture or two. Snapshots are fine. She will let you know if you need more professional pictures now, or if waiting is best. She will give me detailed notes on each of you and I will relay this information to you.

I hope this answers your questions. I hope this eases your mind. I hope now we have 100% participation. It is 15 minutes out of your life, but it could mean the world to your child to receive that positive feedback from a complete stranger.

  • 9am - 11:30am DROP-IN OPEN CALL for Babies, Children, Teens & Adults. The cost is $25 for each person seen by Jayme. Cash only. Each person will meet with Jayme and Amanda one on one. The fee covers Jayme's travel expenses to Valdosta. (Far less expensive than traveling to Atlanta, and then not being seen at all). Please bring one non-returnable photo and a resume, if you have one. If you do not, it is OK! Ages 7 and above will be asked to read a few lines.

Since the last J Pervis Open Call,

the following has happened:

  • Kaileigh auditioned for Disney's "The Odd Life of Timothy Green"...not once, but twice!
  • Morgan Jones was signed with J Pervis.
  • Mary Peeples was signed with J Pervis.
  • Emily Boggs was signed with J Pervis.
  • Morgan and Mary both auditioned for "Army Wives" today in Atlanta.
  • Delainey was asked to submit a follow-up video audition.
  • Parker and Payton were both asked to submit follow-up video auditions.
  • Kaileigh auditioned for "Army Wives" through taped submission

    Fun Factory Honor Roll Program

    Valdosta Public Library

Valdosta Lowndes County Youth Services Department http://www.sgrl.org/pages/youth.html

Hello and welcome to our Youth Services Department!

We are passionate about instilling a love of reading and literacy skills in children and young adults. We offer age appropriate storytimes to ensure that every child is engaged, entertained, and educated. All our storytimes incorporate “pre-literacy skills” which will help children develop into better readers.

    What is Pre-literacy?
Children who enter kindergarten are expected to “pay attention, react to stories, to know some letters of the alphabet and the sounds that these letters make, as well as some basic print concepts, such as knowing that printed words convey meaning” (Neuman).

These abilities are referred to as “pre-literacy skills” because they are the foundation for learning to read later in life. Most pre-literacy skills are learned indirectly, through a child’s interaction with the world. A child’s tendency to repeat new and interesting words, for example, is just one way they explore language.
Although children learn a lot through passive interactions, there are many direct ways parents can help. One easy, and important, way is to take your child to the library.

Attending a storytime at the library with your child serves three functions:

    1. Children begin to associate reading with fun.
    2. Children learn “pre-literacy skills” during the storytime.
    3. Parents discover how to reinforce “pre-literacy skills” in their child’s daily life.

Parents are the single greatest influence on a child’s future literacy level, which is why we give parents tools to help them work on “pre-literacy skills” at home. We teach parents how to take advantage of everyday situations and turn them into learning experiences. A trip to the grocery store, for instance, can easily become a lesson on colors.

Play time and story time are suspended for the month of July at the main branch.

We look forward to seeing you and your child at our library! To make sure that both of you have the best experience possible, please remember that children age ten and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Other library patrons will appreciate your quiet conversation and your respect for library property. Of course, there are ample opportunities for noisy fun, as anyone who has helped Ms. Suzy “shake your wiggles out” will attest!

Whether you are a young person, parent, or a teacher who wishes to take advantage of classroom visits or plan a trip to the library, you are always free to contact our department at 333-0086, extension 212.
