Holiday Open House & Christmas Parade

Downtown Holiday Open House
Valdosta Main Street welcomes in the holiday season with the Downtown Holiday Open House on Saturday, Dec. 1, which includes Breakfast with Santa at the Bleu Cafe, a Camellia Show at First United Methodist Church, a Bazaar and Bake Sale at First Presbyterian Church, an Open House of Downtown Businesses, visits with Santa, a 5k fun run/walk and the traditional Christmas parade.

Greater Valdosta Community Christmas Parade
Each year groups enter floats and follow the unique theme to decorate and showcase their creativity. The night should light up with beautiful displays, along with holiday music, characters, marching bands, and much, much more. The parade route is along Patterson Street from Woodrow Wilson to Downtown.

Valdosta Main Street’s Holiday Open House on Dec. 1 will showcase the unique and magical fun and flare of Downtown Valdosta. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the first of three breakfast events with Santa, and ending with the traditional Greater Valdosta Community Christmas Parade, the Holiday Open House will once again have something for Valdostans of all ages.
The 2012 event planning committee decided this year to eliminate the vendors that have offered food and crafts around the historic Lowndes County Courthouse lawn in past years, and instead, focus on drawing visitors into the one-of-a-kind restaurants and specialty shops located in the downtown area.
Like other areas, we have seen a reduction in the number of vendors participating in festivals. This gives us a great opportunity to continue to focus on the variety of goods and services offered by our unique downtown businesses,” said Valdosta Main Street Manager Amanda Peacock. “Main Street invites our faithful patrons, as well as all area visitors, and their families to celebrate this festive time of year with us.”
Downtown Merchants will be participating in a Window Decorating Contest. Winners will be selected by the Christmas parade judges and announced during the Christmas parade.
In addition to the variety of restaurants and specialty shops open all day, activities going on during the Holiday Open House are as follows:
  • Breakfast with Santa at the Bleu Cafe will take place at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for Kids. Call Bleu Café at (229) 244-2248 for reservations.
  • First Presbyterian Church will host a Bazaar and Bake Sale, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (229) 242-8376.
  • Open House at the Converse-Dalton-Ferrell House, beginning at 10 a.m. Call (229) 563-5843 for details.
  • The Camellia Show at First United Methodist Church will take place from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. Call (229) 242-6416.
  • Visits and photo opportunity with Santa will begin at 11 a.m. on the front lawn of the historic Lowndes County Courthouse.
  • The WinterFest 5K Run/Walk will begin at 4:30 p.m., prior to the Christmas Parade. The WinterFest 5K is sponsored and organized by A Course/Line—Finish Line Service. The race route will begin at the Winn Dixie parking lot, at 3200 N. Ashley Street, proceed down N. Patterson Street, and finish in?Downtown Valdosta in front of Bennie’s Alley. Call (229) 219-0010 or visit www.runningintheusa.com for a race application.
  • The Greater Valdosta Community Christmas Parade—one of Valdosta’s most popular holiday traditions—will begin at 5 p.m., at Woodrow Wilson Drive, proceed down N. Patterson Street, and end at the Department of Health Building. This year’s parade theme is “Christmas Around the World.” Creative holiday floats will be judged on overall appearance, special effects, creativity, workmanship and use of the theme.

City of Valdosta Trick or Treat Times!

For Immediate Release

October 25, 2012

Release #10-12-07

City Sets Hours for Trick-or-Treating

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Valdosta youth are a part of an estimated 41 million children across the United States who potentially could be out trick-or-treating this Halloween.

The Valdosta Police Department has announced that the city’s annual trick-or-treating activity will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m.  Extra police patrol will be scheduled during this time to ensure the evening is both safe and enjoyable for our citizens.

The city offers the following practical tips for citizens and their family members:

  • Children should walk in pairs.
  • Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
  • Adults should accompany children under 12.
  • Children should wear flame-resistant costumes, and fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see them.
  • Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.
  • Adults should pin a slip of paper on their children with the child’s name, address and phone number inside a pocket in case he or she gets separated from the group.
  • In addition to selecting a safe route with good lighting, children should also be equipped with flashlights with fresh batteries or glow sticks to increase visibility.
  • Children should look both ways before crossing the street, and use established crosswalks wherever possible.
  • Adults should inspect treats before children are allowed to eat them. Throw out unwrapped or unpackaged candy.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution and to be on the lookout for these young trick-or-treaters.  For more information, contact Valdosta Police Department Commander Bernard Robinson at (229) 293-3104.

Miss Patty Cake, October 13

Miss Patty Cake

October 13, 2012 10:00 am - 11 am

First Baptist Church
229-242-0484

Miss Patty Cake is a brightly costumed, enthusiastic character played by veteran singer and mother of two, Jean Thomason. The character of Miss PattyCake was created after Jean and her friend Nancy Gordon realized there was a need for preschool music that teaches, worships, and encourages parent-child interaction. Miss PattyCake focuses on Bible-based teaching songs that have become part of “Patty Cake Praise”!
Miss Patty Cake wears a bright, colorful smock with a heart and two hands printed on three pockets. This theme came for an old Shaker motto, “Hands to Work and Hearts to God”. She truly is an ambassador of God’s love throughout the world. In one of her video’s, she travels to El Salvador and teaches children that no matter where they live, no matter what they are doing or how small they are, our enormous God is watching over them.
Miss Patty Cake has traveled, singing to parents with their little ones for 12 years, sold more than 450,000 videos (produced by Integrity Music’s “JUST FOR KIDS” label) and was a Dove Award Nominee. She has performed for numerous Women of Faith Conferences and Children’s Pastor’s Conferences.

GA Tech/UGA Parent Meeting

Some parents have been pushing for  GA Tech & UGA to reach out to more parents and students in our area.  This is a perfect opportunity to get more information without a long drive.  Don’t procrastinate until the senior year!  (no matter how hard it is to think about them leaving)  It’s tough to get into these schools and the meeting will give you some good insight on what’s required.

So, please consider attending this meeting and passing the information along to your friends.  The schools will only keep coming back if the attendance is good.
